Photography Course FAQs
How big are your photography courses?
Our photography courses will have at most six other participants. I think limiting the size is the best way to ensure you get the most out of the day and ensure that there are plenty of opportunities to ask questions either in the group or one to one.
Do I need to have the latest camera?
Absolutely not! For my beginners photography workshop even a compact digital camera is fine – as long as it has controls to adjust shutter speed, aperture and ISO. If you are not sure, please drop me an email with your camera make and model number and I can confirm. For intermediate and advanced photography courses, a DSLR/mirrorless camera is the norm, but even then, it’s not about how new or impressive the equipment is, it’s about building your skills to use what you have to its full potential.
What other equipment do I need?
A tripod or monopod is optional – you’ll be carrying it around for hours though. Please remember to charge your batteries and bring a spare charged battery and have enough space on your memory card for taking scores of photographs. For intermediate and advanced courses, if you have handheld flashguns then feel free to bring them.
What should I wear?
Dress for the season and for being comfortable for a few hours outdoors. Even in summer some of the paths we walk on can be muddy so please wear suitable footwear. This is England, so rain is always a possibility and we recommend you bring a daysack with extra layers and a hat and gloves if your hands get cold. The important thing is to be prepared so you are not uncomfortable if the weather is against us. Don't forget your camera may need something to wear so ensure you have suitable protection for your camera from the elements.
Do I need to be fit?
That’s hard to answer but if you can walk 500m (quarter of a mile) in one go along a path that rises and falls gently, then you will be fine. Please give drop me an email lbeforehand if you have any concerns, but our courses are enjoyable, not a cross-country march!
What else should I bring?
Bring a drink and a snack to keep you going while we are out and about is sensible, along with things like tissues and sun screen if the weather is fine. Please remember to bring any medications you need.
What about insurance?
When looking for a photography course, always ask if they hold public liability insurance. I do, but many don’t. I will give you a briefing beforehand on the conditions on the day and ask that you take sensible precautions when on footpaths and pavements, especially when looking through the viewfinder, but we take the professional approach of holding proper insurance to protect ourselves and our customers.
Any questions though, fill in the form below or drop me an email.
